Wire-Type Suggestions for Solenoid Actuated Pneumatic Valves: .25-1A, 24VDC ?

Hello,
I have a wire-type question  concerning an electro/pneumatic
application which involves controlling .25-1A,24VDC solenoids.

I’m at a bit of a loss in understanding the wire options availible and
where they would apply.

The wire will be hard-wired within walls, and I would like to use
insulated wire without conduit.
Wire distance between switching power supply and solenoid will be 0-60
feet.
I’m seeking a wire with a tough insulation/jacket that will withstand
abrasion from possible contact with metal lathing, nails, etc.
Shielded wire…is it necessary?
I’ve seen pneumatic valves wired with a shielded, three-wire,
individually insulated, jacketed cable and I’ve also seen a burly
three-wire, individually insulated, heavy yellow jacketed cable with
fiber strands inside the jacket.

Any illumination on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Cheers,
-N.

Standard 19" Rack System: Some insight please.

Hi Folks,
I’m considering an enclosure for a project and was thinking it might
be an option to go the route of the standard 19" rack system.

I have a few questions before I plunge forward or retreat.
-I’m considering a 19" rack system for compactness. It might be nice
in the future to have a single rack to hold my electronic components.
-do many standard audio components fit into the 19" rack system? Are
these units specially made with special cases/enclosures to fit the
19" rack system…or does standard off-the-shelf consumer grade audio
equipment also fit into the 19" rack system?
-Switching 24VDC power supply,SSRs,microcontrollers, etc. Is it
acceptable to locate such devices within a rack that also holds audio
and other equipment?Computer equipment?
-A good cheap source for a small rack?
-Self-made options?

Thanks!
Cheers,
-N.

Digital Multimeters, Price and Quality (Fluke versus Tripplet and other cheaper DMMs)

I own an old fluke DMM and it is great. But it lacks features of
today’s more modern DMMs. I am considering another fluke, more
specifically the Fluke 189.
However the price is close to $400 and I don’t necessarily need all of
those features. I keep hearing that while Fluke is expensive, you get
what you pay for. But I truly have to wonder. I have seen DMMs from
Triplett (9000 series) from $60-$130, features packed. Can some of you
explain whether the more costly DMM’s are worth the extra money?
Thanks

Info on British police radios

Do any public sources of information exist on police radios used in
Britain or is it a national secret ? I am looking for the technical
specifications for both hand held and in vehicle radios and their
corresponding base station equipment for hardware used from the 1960s up
until today.

Hi,

Can any multimeter from the Fluke 170 series measure a 22,000 microFarad
capacitor?? What is the maximum value it can measure?

Any interest in a vintage HP 150A oscilloscope?

Somehow I have aquired a HP Model 150A oscilloscope. This thing is huge,
lots of tubes, and made sometime around 1956. It powers up but I have no way
of knowing if it is working. I was told it worked a couple of years ago. I
am in SW Ontario, Canada so if anyone wants to drop by and see it LMK. I
would like to get it out of my way.

Thanks,
Jeff

Metal Detector Plans Rework

Hey there all.
I have been toting around this book on metal detectors for too long.
It has a fairly interresting transmitter/reciever arrangement, but the
parts list is ancient. Tubular capacitors and such. I can’t build it
with a catalog of modern parts. But it is interresting enough to
build.
Here is where I have a copy and a better copy posted:

Just wondering if I can plead on my very knees for someone with a
few extra minutes and a bunch of know-how to rework these plans for
modern, cheap parts. And any other information would be helpful too.
It seems to be a worthwhile project and my electronics math and theory
are rock bottom.
    Thanks all………RR seanu…@hotmail.com
