Very dirty equipment.

Greetings, and thanks for reading this.

I just acquired a Tek x-y display that once resided in a machine shop. It
works ok, but is just nasty inside and out with oil and dirt. I would like
to clean it up. Unfortunately, Tek put no connectors on any of the boards,
so they must be cleaned in place. I feel like taking it to the car wash.
Anybody have an better idea on how to get this guy cleaned up?

thanks
John

Help! DSO or DPO ???

What are the advantages/disadvantages of a DSO and DPO?

I am trying to decide between buying a Tek TDS 3014 (100 MHZ, DPO)
and a TEK TDS 2024(200 MHZ, DSO).  I will being using it for a wide
range of signals (digital < 33 MHZ, LF RF, and general purpose
analog).

The DSO is faster ( 2 Gsa/S ) and cheaper.
So, in what situation will the DPO be better?

Thanks and May Christ richly bless you in every way!

Very salty equipment

Further to the "very dirty equipment" we have a related problem.
We operate electronic equipment in a potash and salt mine
(http://hepwww.rl.ac.uk/ukdmc/pix/boulby.html).  Its very dusty
down there and the dust is mostly halite – NaCl but theres some
KCl too.  Its also very dry so this dust normally doesn’t affect
the equipment at all.   However, when equipment is returned to the
suface, moisture in the air gets in and the salt begins to corrode
the electronics.   So far we’ve tried things like washing boards
in isopropanol-water mixture, then isopropanol then drying out.
This works mostly – but does anyone have any better ideas.
We’ve also tried spraying with conformal coatings – but the problems
always seem to be with edge connectors in computer boards where
coatings are not going to help.

John McMillan
